Pilot Light Moon

Pilot Light Moon

The old woman wakes in the full moon night
to the sound of a cat
bird in the lemon tree.

Feet on the floor, glasses
found, outside
into the dim lit hills.

Above, Cassiopeia,
beneath, dry leaves, the scrape of bricks
against bare soles.
Within, a flame flares
as if her feet were a match against the rough.

Past the well
around the pond
into the woods where
under the branches of the ancient maple
where the squirrel sleeps
she lies on a bed of moss
and dreams.

  1. Gorgeous. Absolutely gorgeous. I can see the Pippi you wandering out in a sleepless night. (Speaking of Pippi, Larsson's Brita reminds me so much of a young you. She's smiling at me as we speak.)

  3. Thank you for this. It conjures starlight, magic, the scent of moss, so many things and I love it.

Wanted to ask if I may copy your poem about Clouties? I love that one as well, and long ago, participated with a group of people in making clouties.

    Thanks,
